The task was to conduct an analysis of the Atlantic Magazine, determine its rhetorical attributes, and then translate those into moving images. For this assignment, I created compositions with clean design, smart visuals and thoughtful images, giving a dynamic feeling to it. I found that The Atlantic achieves an appealing balance between pathos, ethos, and logos. Rhetorical attributes that resonate with their readership, which is predominantly young, educated and progressive professionals.

Next, I began planning and organizing my ideas, creating storyboards, and experimenting with the technical tools available to me, such as Photoshop and After Effects. In some of my compositions, I chose to alter the usual context or references of certain elements. For example, in one composition, a small plastic soldier uses a microphone to convey the title “We Are Not at War; We Are at Work,” as if the microphone were a rifle and the letters were bullets. This alludes to some of the rhetorical figures, such as a metaphor.

I believe the rhetorical qualities of my assigned magazine are conveyed through the dynamic movements of my compositions, which showcase energy and boldness. These characteristics create action, grab attention, and make the content more engaging. The timing, speed, and rhythm reinforce this dynamism, while kinetic typography adds hierarchy to the compositions, the overlapping elements and gradual reveals create depth and enhance storytelling, characteristics that align with The Atlantic’s vision.
